Conference: Policy Analysis in Indian Country, AZ
(posted 2-28-08)

Diné Policy Institute and Diné College present:
K’é bil nastii: Making policy from Traditional Perspectives.
Policy Analysis in Indian Country
Tsaile, Navajo Nation (AZ)
June 19-20, 2008

Indian Country has yet to critically evaluate the policy-making and policy analysis processes it uses. These processes affect the implementation of traditional norms and values in Tribal policy settings.

Policy analysis is often viewed as a benign process that does not impact the use of traditional principles. Yet, when examined carefully, policy analysis frames and problemitizes issues in a western frame. Analysts (e.g. attorneys, staff assistants, program directors/managers, elected officials, and researchers, and so forth) in Indian Country then work within that western frame, attempting to apply traditional values. This poses a problem as to validity of cultural appropriate policy outcomes. If the traditional value is framed in western notions, how then does the outcome promote traditional values? Policy analysis and policy-making impacts how traditional values and norms are used; autonomy over values and their use is given up to the dominant policy analysis and policy-making processes.

This conference will shed light on the following questions:

1. How do Indigenous people create a policy analysis process based on Indigenous worldviews that sustains, supports and preserves traditional values and norms in contemporary policy settings?

2. How do Indigenous people create a shared governance policy framework that is also understood by non Indigenous society?

3. How do Indigenous people mitigate the negative impacts resulting from the usage of dominant policy tools in Tribal policy settings?

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTERS

Topics include:
§ Theory of policy making and policy analysis process
§ Indigenous worldviews
§ Traditional decision-making processes
§ Community-Based Policy Research
§ Traditional knowledge and the philosophy of economics
§ Traditional values and the environment
§ Traditional Law and Policy
§ Traditional Tribal Knowledge, Self Governance and Philosophy
§ Ethics and Traditional Knowledge
§ Translation from Policy research to Practice
§ Infusing Traditional Knowledge into the Policy processes

Submit the title of the presentation ,a brief description (2-3 sentences) of the topic; the name, tribal and/or university affiliation, degree earned, address, telephone number and email address; and, an abstract (250 word limit) of the paper.

Proposals may be sent by email to Moroni Benally at mtbenally@dinecollege.edu by May 10, 2008.

The Sacred Run - 30th Anniversary of The Longest Walk
(posted 1-1-08)

From Dennis Banks

We take this opportunity to invite you to be part of an historic event, The Longest Walk 2008. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Longest Walk 1978, anothergreat Walk will take place with a mission to Clean Up Mother Earth on its route. The Longest Walk will begin on February 11, 2008 in San Francisco and end 4,400 miles and 5 months later in Washington D.C. on July 11, 2008. Our message is: ALL LIFE IS SACRED.

Out of The Longest Walk 1978, our sister event The Sacred Run was born. The Sacred Run has yearly environmental walks and runs the world over. Over the last 30 years, over 1,000 Sacred Run participants have run over 25,000 miles around the world spreading the message through countries such as: The United States, Japan,Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Scotland, Norway, Belgium, Poland, Finland,Estonia, Latvia and Russia. These walks and runs have been supported by many activists, entertainers and politicians: Muhammad Ali, Marlon Brando, Willie Nelson,Stevie Wonder, Ken Norton and former California Governor Jerry Brown to name a few.

The Longest Walk and The Sacred Run are funded by financial contributions and volunteer support that come from special events, through the sale of merchandise, and benefit concerts. For The Longest Walk 2008 to be a success, your contribution is necessary and will be greatly appreciated. The Nowa Cumig Institute is a federally recognized nonprofit 501(C3) organization and will be financially responsible for all contributions. All contributions are tax deductible.

Thank you for supporting The Longest Walk 2008 and bringing this message of environmental harmony to your community.

Respectfully,
Dennis J. Banks

August 20-23, 2008
Celebration of Spirit, Trans-global Conference, FL
(posted 2-26-08)

PRESS RELEASE

CELEBRATION OF SPIRIT

Houston, TX – for immediate release

A first-ever gathering of American Indian Nations featuring a trans-global conference of tribal leaders to be held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, on August 20-23 has been announced by the Native American Chamber of Commerce in Houston. Some 3,000 Indians from the U.S and Canada are expected to celebrate this event in dance, song, sports, food and golf.

The four-day event will feature prominent leaders and native celebrities from many of the 565 Indian Nations recognized by the federal government, as well as many from Canada and the Americas.

Major U.S. firms practicing social responsibility and supporting diversity, such as Lockheed Martin, Wal-Mart, IBM, Marathon Oil, UPS and BNSF are among the dozens of U.S. Corporations signed up to sponsor the event. All proceeds less expenses will go to education and native achievement centers.

In what may also be a first for the Native American, the inaugural day of the event will feature presidential candidates invited to speak about their positions regarding native sovereignty and rights at a formal dinner for tribal leaders and prime sponsors.

“Given the many challenges facing the American Indian and Alaskan Native today – unemployment, poverty, education, housing, contaminated lands – it will be important for our next president to clearly speak to an agenda which will address these needs,” said Carroll Cocchia, Chamber President.

In the following days, the Indian pageant will feature a special day for native business people and entrepreneurs to do what Indians have done from time immemorial – trade. A third day will feature native skateboarding. A final day showcases a huge selection of Native dancers, drummers, story tellers, artists, craftsmen and native foods to celebrate the depth and breadth of the Indian culture.

Inquiries can be addressed by email to Carroll Cocchia: cocchia1@sbcglobal.net.
